Battery Warren
A couple of weekends back my brother Aaron and I took the kids for a ride on the South Santee River. The water levels are low from the drought so we thought we would take a ride and see what we could see.
We put in at McConnell's Landing (see map, landing is on Forest Rd 204F). Even with the water levels low, it is a scenic ride. The South Santee has high bluffs with the Forest on one side and the delta on the other.
We made a few stops to check out the lime stone outcrops that are exposed at low water. They were like white shelves at the base of the bluff. We also made a stop at Battery Warren. The old civil war earthen fort is a great place to stop and let the kids explore and maybe picnic. There is a trail and informational displays.
We kept to the river, but paddlers might try the Echaw Canoe Trail from McConnell's Landing, up the Santee, to Echaw Creek, to Pitch Landing.
